Six years ago, PHS board member Bob Hyland and Andrew Beckman, publisher of Timber Press, traded 24 acres in the Hudson River Valley and a connoisseur plant nursery 100 miles north of New York City for two thirds of an acre in Portland, Oregon. They gained three hardiness zones in the process.
Today, their exuberant five-year-old garden, Harborton Hill, perches on a hillside above US Route 30 looking out over the confluence of the Willamette and Columbia Rivers and slices of the industrial landscape of North Portland. Capitalizing on a greatly expanded plant palette, their garden features naturalistic beds and borders planted with a matrix of climate-adapted shrubs and perennials that thrive in Portland’s cycles of dry summers and wet winters.
You’re invited to visit this exquisite plantsmans’ garden and enjoy light refreshments as we celebrate Pacific Horticulture.
